Air freight is more expensive than road, sea, or rail transport. However, it remains highly popular due to its unrivaled speed. This allows goods to be delivered in just a few hours over distances measured in thousands of kilometers, which would take weeks or months with other modes of transport.
The cost of air cargo transportation is determined taking into account the following factors:
- the airline's current rates (regular and large customers often receive discounts, bonuses, or other preferential terms)
- quantity of goods
- type of cargo (other rates apply for fragile, perishable, dangerous and other specific cargo)
If you need to ship a relatively small quantity of goods (from 1 kg), you can ship them as part of a consolidated shipment. They will be transported in a shared container with other customers' shipments. The only caveat is that you'll need to wait for the shipment to be assembled, but the cost of air freight will be distributed proportionally among all cargo owners.
The cost of transportation may increase due to additional services. These include labeling, packaging, sorting, loading and unloading, documentation, customs clearance, insurance, temporary storage, and more.
